Marlies van Strien

Marlies van Strien (admitted to the Bar in 1988) mostly deals with economic criminal law, particularly environmental criminal law, matters of criminal liability as a result of the Working Conditions Act and cases involving accidents and/or work on the railway network. She advises various medium to large-sized companies and civil services. She also assists police officers during internal investigations involving shooting incidents or in the application of the rules of engagement. 

Education and career

In 1992, Marlies van Strien was one of the founders of our firm. She made partner in 1994 and practices law from our offices in The Hague. Between 2003 and 2011, she was a member of and responsible for the Criminal Law section in the Supervisory Board of the The Hague Bar Association and chairman of the The Hague Advisory Committee on Criminal Law.


Marlies studied criminal law at the Erasmus University in Rotterdam. Following her graduation (1986), she joined Holla Advocated and went on to Dutilh van der Hoeven & Slager, currently Nauta Dutilh. She followed the postgraduate specialisation course in criminal law at the Willem Pompe Institute of Utrecht University.

For years and years, Marlies has been teaching criminal procedure law at the vocational training for lawyers and she is an editor of the Sdu Commentaar Strafrecht en Strafprocesrecht (Comments on Criminal Law and Criminal Procedure Law).
