Erik Witjens (admitted to the Bar in 2015) handles general criminal cases as well as economic criminal cases. He has special expertise in criminal cases with a Caribbean component, also as a result of his involvement in the amendment of the Code of Criminal Procedure of Aruba, Curacao and St Martin.
Education and career
Erik Witjens studied Criminal Law at Groningen University. After earning his degree in 2004, he elected to pursue a doctorate in law at the department of Criminal Law and Criminology of this same university, and subsequently defended his dissertation on causation in criminal and private law in 2011 (supervisors: prof. G. Knigge and prof. M.H. Wissink, co-supervisor prof. H.D. Wolswijk). After this, Erik went on to work as an associate professor of criminal law and criminal procedure at the University of Aruba. He joined Sjöcrona ∙ van Stigt in February, 2015, and works from our offices in Rotterdam.
Erik is an editor of the Tijdschrift voor Sanctierecht & Onderneming (Sanctions Law & Company magazine). He is also one of the authors of the SDU Commentary on the Code of Criminal Procedure.
